Tango -Dance, Music and Immigration-
Remarkable scene from the Film Tango (1988) depicting 'The great European immigration wave' to Argentina which took place in the late 19th and early 20th century. It consisted mostly of Italian and Spanish immigrants, along with other nationalities such as Slavs (especially Ukrainians, Poles, and Russians), French and Germans among others. During this period Argentina saw a huge increase in population. Tango is in essence a hybrid music and dance genre in its foundation we find the African candombe, Spanish tango,the Cuban habanera ("dance of Havana") and European social dances brought to Argentina by immigrants.
