What do chickens need in the winter? People ask this question all the time and I thought I'd put a video together about how I care for my chickens through the winter. We are raising chickens for eggs and it's important to understand how they lay in relation to your hen's maturity. It's also important to understand their feed requirements through their first winter while laying and for the years after while they are molting.
I'll take you into my chicken coop and show you the process of cleaning it out and natural ways to cut down on pests and diseases like using Diatomaceous Earth for your chickens. I'll also cover my choice of chicken coop bedding and nest box bedding. You'll see that we don't have a source of heat in our chicken coops and they do just fine through the winter, in fact, chickens can handle freezing temps just fine. The main thing you want to consider is keeping them out of direct wind.
