Beyond Neutron's core: Building your own L3 plugin

In this workshop, we’ll guide participants through the end-to-end process of building a custom Layer 3 (L3) service provider plugin for OpenStack Neutron using the Service Type Framework. The plugin will delegate L3 functionality from OpenStack to an external system managing L3 logic.

We will get hands-on experience writing the code for a service provider, registering it in Neutron, and implementing the necessary logic to interact with an external API, laying the foundation for real-world use cases like SDN controllers, proprietary routers, or custom edge networking solutions. By the end, we’ll have a minimal but working example of a plugin that integrates OpenStack networking with an external system—without modifying Neutron’s core.
