Medieval Theatre

The origins of theatre as we know it today originally comes from the church: Mystery plays, Miracle plays and Morality plays. This is an attempt to explain a bit of this history to my grade eleven English students at Liceo Musicale Bonporti in Tento, Italy during the time of our lockdown from the coronavirus.

If you are intrigued by Medieval stories and the concept of a Morality play, I definitely recommend Barry Sommer's novel, "Morality Play".

I didn't put it in the video, as it's a lecture topic in itself for another year and another unit, but my favourite Christmas Carol comes from a Mystery play - The Coventry Carol, with it's haunting harmonies and chilling story of the Massacre of the Innocents (fun stuff at Christmas!).
