What is a pre-payment meter? | Compare the Market

Find out what you need to know about pre-payment meters, including what they might mean for your energy bill.

What is a pre-payment meter?

With a pre-payment meter, you pay in advance for the energy you use. It’s a bit like having a pay-as-you-go mobile phone. Pre-payment meters have a slot or keyhole on the front, which takes a prepaid card or key. The way you top them up can vary, depending on your energy supplier and meter. Shops with a PayPoint or Payzone facility and Post Offices offer top-ups, and some energy suppliers now offer top-ups via text, app or online.

Is a pre-paid meter more expensive than a regular meter?

It’s typically more expensive. Pre-payment meters are often put in place for tenants or for those struggling to pay for their energy, and the tariffs tend to be higher than with a standard meter. It's worth checking to see if you might be able to switch prepayment meter plans and save.
