When the walls in Berlin collapsed on November 9th, 1989, it was the Koreans who probably had been in awe the most to see the historical event unfold.
The symbolic structures of the Cold War at that time were the Berlin Wall, representing the division of Germany, and the inter-Korean fences that split the Korean Peninsula into two.
Korea and Germany had to sustain the pain of their nations being divided at the end of World War II in 1945.
Marking the 34th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s collapse and the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice, visual artist CHA Joo-man installed an artwork this year at the historic site where the wall had fallen in the German capital with materials retrieved from the fences in Korea.
We dive into his artistic world, where he dreams of achieving infinite freedom.

1989년 11월 9일, 베를린 장벽이 붕괴됐을 때 그 역사적 장면을 가장 경이로운 시선으로 응시한 이들은 한국인들이었을 것이다.
당시 지구상에 냉전의 상징물은 독일 분단의 상징인 베를린 장벽과 한반도 분단의 상징인 남북 분단 철책선 이 두 개뿐이었다.
2차 세계대전이 종료되던 1945년 조국이 분단되는 아픔을 겪어야 했던 한국과 독일.
베를린 장벽 붕괴 34주년, 한국전쟁 정전 70년이 되는 올해, 베를린 장벽이 붕괴된 역사적 장소에서 남북 분단의 상징인 한반도 철책선을 설치미술로 전시한 차주만 작가.
그가 꿈꾸는 무한 자유의 세계를 예술작품으로 경험한다.
