10.9 94% Continuity of Care for women - the New Zealand way #MidwiferyHour
On this episode we looked at continuity of care with a wider lens. Sam will explore how a very small team designed and implemented the maternity care system in New Zealand where 94% of women get government funded continuity of midwifery care. We will be joined by Emma to look at midwifery continuity of carer and supporting parents-to-be in their pregnancy and birth choices, working flexibly to provide holistic, individualised care.

Sam Denny
I am a nurse, midwife, mother, project manager, and soon-to-be grandmother. I have championed healthcare improvement for as long as I have worked. I seek solutions in every context and can be tenacious in that quest. I’ve recently embarked on a new endeavour as a researcher to support ICM’s Push campaign for more midwifery-led continuity of carer across the globe. I was lead midwife on a national project in the 1990s in Aotearoa New Zealand to reform maternity services with a lead maternity carer for each woman and her whanau or family. We developed a bundled payment system with detailed service requirements and referral guidelines, all of which are regularly reviewed and still in place. I subsequently worked as project and program manager in other areas of healthcare including screening programs and emergency medicine in NZ and Australia. I am currently Project Manager for a WHO/IFEM project.
Emma McKay

The team are proud to have won several awards for their dedication to the local homebirth service and recognition of their outstanding contribution to maternity and midwifery services.
