Honda’s announcement that they will leave F1 after 2021 sparked suggestions that Red Bull driver Max Verstappen’s contract with the team has a clause that will allow him to get out of his contract because of Honda’s departure. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has now revealed to Servus TV if there is any truth to this matter

Horner got straight to the point

“There is no such clause in his contract”

“The contracts between the driver and the team are private, but there is definitely no engine-related clause in Max's contract”

Horner then went on to reason why Verstappen is happy with where he is

"He is competitive. He feels very comfortable in the team and believes strongly in the Honda program”

Horner also pointed out how Honda will be going all in for 2021

"I think he also sees that Honda has brought forward the engine from 2022 to 2021. That is encouraging, of course”

Horner concluded his words by suggesting that there is a long way to go until 2022

"So, we will take another step forward next year. He's excited about this, and he still has a long way to go until 2022”

Red Bull’s Alex Albon has stated that teammate Max Verstappen “doesn't hide anything. There is no political nature to him, not in the slightest. He's an open book”

He also revealed that they “talk openly about what” they “need in the car and it tends to go in the same direction, so it's positive in that sense”

Max Verstappen feels that “it is of course a shame that Honda are leaving Formula One” as “the dedication of the people involved in the project has always been very important for” him

He, however, added that “nothing has changed” and that they “still have the rest of this season and next season to focus on together and” they’re “still trying to be on the podium every single race”

He also pointed out that he hasn’t “raced at the Nürburgring since Formula 3 so” he’s “excited to go back there to see what a Formula One car can do. It’s a very technical track” that he likes

He further suggested that there “may be a little bit of rain so hopefully that will make it an even more interesting race weekend”

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc added to that by saying “that the clouds are never far away in the Eifel. Circumstances can change from one moment to the next”

He would also “like to get on the track and see how the corners are with the level of downforce that these cars have”

Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo looked back at Max Verstappen’s debut with Red Bull and how he “won it immediately” which “is a real nightmare for a team mate” which at that time was Ricciardo himself

Therefore he “kept a cool head and immediately wanted to find a way to stay ahead of” Verstappen “because one thing was clear to” him - “Max is extraordinarily talented and special”

He also added that “not only was he very fast, but he also had a lot of supporters behind him” but Ricciardo “also loved challenges like that” which taught him “to think more technically”

Christian Horner has stated that for them “it is important that” they “have sufficient power to be able to challenge Mercedes in the coming years”

He also pointed out that “Renault has changed a lot since” their partnership with Red Bull ended as “there's a new board and that has bought a breath of fresh air and changes with it”

AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly has admitted that he is “sad that Honda is leaving Formula 1 after the experiences” they “shared together over the past four years”

He further explained that “the people at Honda have played an important role in” his “career and” that he has “always loved working with them”

Meanwhile, his teammate Daniil Kvyat thinks that “the Honda guys at the track are really committed and” he’s “sure they will continue to push while they are still in the sport”
