Jewels of the rain forest - frog photography
I have always been fascinated by frogs and it is through them that I started my journey in photography. I have been breeding poison dart frogs for years and have also taken many pictures of them. Poison dart frogs are the jewels of the rainforest. Beautifully coloured and, on top of that, they have a very interesting biology. They come in all colours of the rainbow and can be found in the central and south American rainforests.
So I have often been to South and Central America to look for and photograph these wonderful animals. But most of my frog photos have been taken in Europe, with studio flash light.
In this video, I will show how I went about this and what equipment you need to take such images. This can be done either with a large studio softbox or with a smaller flash combined with a small softbox. The second method you can use in the field, but you will probably need assistance to keep the flash in the right place.
In most of my frog photos, I use backlighting combined with light from above and a little reflective fill from the front. This gives the photos a special atmosphere and glow. This lighting creates a play of light and shadow that accentuates the body shapes and the structure of the skin. In this picture, the structure of the skin is clearly visible, and this type of lighting also creates a sense of depth in the photo.
