Clinically Relevant Subsets of CRPS | R. Norman Harden, MD | RSDSA
R. Norman Harden, MD presented on "Clinically Relevant Subsets of CRPS" during our Treating the Whole Person: Optimizing Wellness Virtual Conference from October 19-22, 2020.
Finally, there is an international, validated, accessible and consensus based clinical diagnostic criteria. This has greatly improved identification of and communication about patients with CRPS. The criteria has also improved research specificity; yet as a general criteria it has not served as a good 'screening' tool to identify subjects for inclusion in research protocols of interventions with a specific mechanism of action. As a multi-factorial disease including 'all comers' in research of interventions with a specific mechanism have failed. The interventions tested so far appear to work well in a sub-set of subjects, but not with sufficient overall response to show statistical significance.
The identification of these 'Clinically Relevant Subsets', and matching the mechanism of disease with the mechanism of the intervention will likely improve research outcomes. Importantly identification of these Clinically Relevant Subsets will certainly improve the outcomes in the clinic, allowing a focus of treatment in the multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary context.
