What's up you guys! Today we are going to be breaking down why Turo is banned in the entire state of New York. Let's go!

01:35 - What Happened?
In 2013 Turo was operating as Relay Rides, and at the time they were operating in the state of New York. Like many states, New York has rules regarding insurance - basically, you have to meet certain guidelines and qualifications in order to offer insurance in the state. Where Turo got into trouble was the fact that Turo (or Relay Rides at the time) was offering insurance in the form of protection packages and because of the fact that the insurance Relay Rides was offering was not licensed by the state, this was not considered a valid form of insurance.

This opened a whole can of worms because then it begged the question, well what happens if there was an accident in a Turo car in New York?

This sparked an investigation which led the state to determine that Relay Rides insurance was not valid and thus if there was an accident it would not be used as primary insurance. This caused the state to deem that Turo (Relay Rides) was false advertising because while Relay Rides was claiming anyone who hosts their car will have $1,000,000 worth of coverage, this was not the case in New York where Relay Rides insurance wasn't even valid.

This caused Relay Rides to be fined $200,000 and they were ordered to stop operating in the state.

06:07 - A Comeback
Once Relay Rides became Turo they did make a comeback briefly, last Summer Turo announced they were going back to the Big Apple through their commercial host program, but this was short-lived because about 8 months later Turo ended their Commercial Host program.
