Lost In Ladakh | EP 26 | Day 15 | Padum to Gonbo Rangjon | The Best Mountain Peak in India!!! 😍

Day 15
Padum to Gonbo Rangjon
85 kms

Morning arrived with a bittersweet farewell as Gary prepared to head off toward Kargil. I gave him a wave as he disappeared down the rugged path. Our own departure was still a few hours away; we were bound for a place I’d only heard whispers of: Gonbo Rongjan.

When noon rolled around, Hulk and I hit the trail, winding through rough, unpaved roads. The journey was immediately challenging, but after an hour of bouncing over rocks and dust, we veered onto a small, narrow village road. The tarmac was smooth but far narrower than what we’d been riding. The path rose high above the valley, and my heart pounded in sync with the rhythm of our climb—this was no road for the faint of heart. Every bend felt like the edge of the world, each stretch a step closer to the sky.

Two hours later, the road merged with the highway, and we rolled into a small village called Kargyak. It was there that I saw it: a mountain so stunning, it took my breath away. I glimpsed it from over 10 kms away, a silhouette against the sky, rising like a silent guardian. With each km we rode, the mountain grew in size, its form sharpening, its presence intensifying. The wind picked up, carrying an odd vibration—a hum that seemed to pulse from the rocky face itself.

The locals call it “God’s Mountain,” a sacred place for those who practice Tibetan Buddhism, and I could see why. It stood alone, mighty and imposing, carved by time into an imposing pillar. As we drew closer, I could feel its power, almost like it was watching over everything around it, timeless and patient.

Just as I was scouting a spot to pitch my tent, a motorbike pulled up beside me. A solo rider from Punjab climbed off, introducing himself with a smile. His gaze fell on Hulk, and his face lit up—he, too, had beagles back home. We bonded over stories of our dogs and decided to set up camp together near a small stream. The night air turned bitterly cold, and the wind sliced through the valley.

Later, as darkness settled, we looked up at a sky ablaze with stars. There, under that vast and endless universe, I felt a quiet peace. This was it—the final night of a two-week journey, an adventure I’d remember for a lifetime. Tomorrow, Hulk and I would ride back to where it all began, back to Manali. But tonight, under the stars and with the towering mountain standing guard, it felt like the perfect ending to a fairytale.
