After planning my birthday vacation to Cancun, Mexico with someone for weeks, they canceled on me only a week before we were supposed to leave for Mexico. I found myself with two choices, give up and let all that planning go to waste, or put my fears and doubts aside and take a leap of faith and go alone. I chose to go solo! I was terrified to travel out of the country by myself but I did it anyway and I did it scared. I stayed at Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres, an all inclusive 5 star resort in playa Mujeres, just a 40 minute drive from Cancun International Airport. The resort felt very secluded and there were few other resorts around, I felt like I was on a private island! One common concern that most people have when considering solo travel I believe is “who will take my pictures?” I bought a 60” tripod and took some amazing pictures with it!

Solo Travel Safety Tips
- Trust & follow your intuition.
- Research research research! I cannot stress this enough make sure you do your homework in regards to the hotel/resort/airbnb/hostel and area you’ll be staying at, check your government’s website for information on the travel documents you require and any warnings for your destination.
- Book a flight with daytime arrival that way if your accommodation does not meet your personal safety standards, you will have time to make other arrangements.
- If your hotel/resort does not offer airport transfer, book a taxi in advance.
- Do not leave your drinks unattended (you should practice this even at home).
- Do not tell strangers where you’re staying or your room number.
- Do not post your location on social media until you have left.
- Stay alert
- Move with confidence
- Research the currency/currencies that are accepted at your destination and be sure to have some cash with you and your debit and/or credit card (even if you are staying at an all inclusive resort)
- Keep your important travel documents and emergency cash in your room safe.
- Share the details of your hotel, flight and airport transfer with your loved ones.
