Mara & Rana Nap in the Rain

Over the weekend, we had a torrential downpour of rain. When it started raining, Kat and Scott were with Maia, doing a tick check and bug spray application. She started getting silly, but Kat and Scott were getting soaked, so they left her to be silly by herself. She didn’t seem to mind. On their way to seek shelter, they saw Lady in the mud wallow. It seems Lady didn’t find the heavy rain to be sufficient, as she was happily applying a thick coating of mud to herself. Of course, the rain was washing it away as quickly as she put it on, but it didn’t seem to dissuade her.

They made it back up to the house and checked the cameras, just in time to record these video clips. It seems Mara and Rana were very sleepy and lazy in the rain. In the wild, when a member of a herd lays down to sleep, another elephant usually stands over them, watching for potential danger. Of course, there are no dangers here, but Mara was a perfect herd member, standing over Rana while she napped. Being a good friend is rather exhausting, so eventually, Mara laid next to Rana to sleep as well. Mara got up first, and then Rana rose after.

Bambi was near the barn but not on camera, so we aren’t sure how she enjoyed the rain, but she seemed happy and content when we checked on her later.

In the video, Mara is on the left; and Rana is on the right (and also lays down first).
