The Roman cornu / Le cornu romain

Un cornu intact a été retrouvé dans une caserne de gladiateurs de Pompéi. En forme de G, il comporte une hampe diamétrale servant à la fois à rigidifier l’instrument et à le porter.
Sa sonorité est proche de celle du cor de chasse contemporain. Son rôle était de diriger les enseignes des cohortes selon les consignes du légat (général) sur le champ de bataille. Il avait un rôle tactique ; chaque manœuvre était probablement associée à une mélodie spécifique.
Certains auteurs avancent parfois que le cornu en cuivre (ou bronze) était auparavant en corne sans que les textes en fournissent la preuve. Nous pensons que compte tenu de l’étymologie du mot signifiant littéralement corne, il y a tout lieu de le penser. De tels cas existent dans d’autres civilisations. Il est même probable qu’à l’époque romaine, les deux instruments existassent simultanément avec le même nom. On sait que les cornes de vache et d’aurochs étaient utilisées comme outil de signalement à ces époques. Rappelons à ce propos la découverte de l’une d’elles dans les mines de sel de Hallstatt (Autriche) datée des VIIe-VIe s. av. J.-C.

An intact horn was found in a Pompeii glacier barracks. In the shape of a G, it has a diametral shaft serving both to stiffen the instrument and to carry it.
Its sound is close to that of the contemporary horn. Its role was to direct the signs of the cohorts according to the instructions of the legate (general) on the battlefield. He had a tactical role. Each maneuver was probably associated with a specific melody.
Some authors sometimes argue that the horn of copper (or bronze) was formerly of horn, but the texts do not prove it. We think that given the etymology of the word meaning literally horn, there is every reason to think so. Such cases exist in other civilizations. It is even probable that in Roman times both instruments would exist simultaneously with the same name. It is known that the horns of cow and aurochs were used as a signaling tool at these times. Let us recall in this connection the discovery of one of them in the salt mines of Hallstatt (Austria) dating from the 7th-6th century BC.
