Tortoise Mating. Tortoises are reptiles of the family Testudinidae of the order Testudines. Like other turtles, tortoises have a shell to protect from predation and other threats. Mating occurs any time other than during hibernation. Females store sperm and may lay fertile eggs for several years after separation from a male.
