32 years in the trade has taught me a thing or two.This is another possibility why your relief valve has popped on your hot water boiler.Very first thing to do is turn off the power to the furnace as heating the water will cause the relief to pop again as it has no where to expand. If it is extremely cold and you cannot get it fixed you will have to contend with the water. An extrol tank could be the problem. There is a diaghram in the tank. The tank comes pre-charged with 12 pounds of pressure. If your relief valve is blowing off; check your tank by tapping the top and then the bottom. They should sound differently if the tank is good. If they sound the same then it is time to replace the tank. I personally don't like extrol tanks as it cannot be drained like an expansion tank can. Every time the extrol tank diaghram gets a pin hole you have to purchase a new one as compared to a 36 inch expansion tank that will last for decades...please subscribe and have a good day.
