The 1982 ColecoVision television commercial showcasing gameplay from Donkey Kong, Zaxxon, Venture, and Cosmic Avenger was a turning point for me as a young gamer. Until then, I was content playing video games at friends’ and cousins’ houses. But seeing those sharp graphics and smooth arcade-like animation on TV—especially Donkey Kong, which looked nearly identical to the arcade version—completely changed my mindset. The commercial made the ColecoVision feel like a home arcade, not just another console. That brief montage of action-packed gameplay didn’t just sell a product—it sparked a need. From that moment on, I had to have one. And I did get one for Christmas that year.
