The Importance of Knowing Family History
In this video, host Dr. Mariana Martinez interviews Victoria Harrison, MA, LMFT, senior faculty at the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family. New research in genetics and epigenetics would say that the influence of history over the generations is variable. Each generation that builds on past experience and reactivity is modifying, moderating, or maintaining those influences. The impact of the nuclear family and our own functioning can modify our functioning and the functioning of future generations. A pattern of cutting off from the past as a way of pursuing opportunity or dealing with difficult people can develop. Broader knowledge of past generations is relevant in dealing with reactivity in the present.
