Nature and Life - Episode 212 (Migratory Wild Ducks of Bangladesh)

Bangladesh is a country of temperate weather.
Due to favorable environmental condition a unique ecosystem, rich with floral & faunal diversity, has emerged here.
The country is rich with hills, fountains, plain land forests, mangrove forest and various wetlands like- rivers, haor, baor, beel etc.
Vast coastal region is sited in the south.
As a result, Bangladesh has become a safe habitat for Waterbirds.
Millions of migratory ducks migrate here in winter from colder countries.
Around 24 species of migratory wild ducks can be seen in this country.
Among these ducks Fulvous Whistling Duck, Common Shelduck, Ruddy Shelduck, Bar-headed Goose, Baer’s Pochard, Common Pochard, Northern Shoveler, Garganey, Eurasian Wigeon, Northern Pintail etc. are remarkable.
They differ from each other by size and color.
Haor, baor, beel, other water bodies and islands become sonorous with chirping.
Most of the species of migratory wild ducks roam in flock.
They forage for feeding in the wetlands and roost in the shore of the wetlands in flock.
Ruddy Shelduck is a very beautiful wild duck.
They can be seen in flock.
They are large sized deep brown or reddish duck.
They migrate from middle Asia, via Himalayan, to our country in winter and remain in alluvial coastal region, haor region and in the shores of rivers.
Common Shelduck is also sized like Ruddy Shelduck.
This is a uniquely beautiful duck with deep red bill and white & red mixed body color.
They roam in flock on the coastal mud, chars, wetlands and river estuaries.
A large number of Whistling Ducks are seen in our wetlands, especially in haor region, in winter.
Two of their species are seen in our country.
Fulvous Whistling Duck and Lesser Whistling Duck.
Fulvous Whistling Ducks migrate to our country in winter.
A small number of Lesser Whistling Ducks remain in the water bodies of our country throughout the year.
But in winter a large number of Lesser Whistling Ducks migrate to our country and mix with our native ones.
Eurasian Wigeons are medium sized duck with bluish bill.
They can be seen in rivers and lagoons.
They usually roam in large flock.
They feed on grass, aquatic plants, insects, snails etc.
Northern Pintail is a migratory duck with long throat and pointed tail.
They can be seen in haor, coastal region and rivers in winter.
Bar-headed Goose is a large sized waterbird.
They roam on the banks of wetlands, coastal islands and on the chars of large rivers.
They can be seen feeding both in daytime and night.
They are one of the rare migratory birds of Bangladesh.
Northern Shovelers are widely available migratory birds of Bangladesh.
They can be seen in almost all types of wetlands in winter.
They are so named because their long and wide bill looks almost like shovel.
A number of species of Pochard migrate to Bangladesh.
Among those Red-crested Pochard, Common Pochard and Ferruginous Duck are remarkable.
Red-crested Pochard is a beautiful bird.
They roam in flock.
They are common in the haor region of our country.
They can also be seen in large rivers and in coastal region.
All species of migratory wild ducks are vital for our aquatic ecosystem.
They help in controlling harmful insects.
They keep the wetlands clean by feeding on diseased fishes.
Besides, their droppings make the land fertile.
They are vital for maintaining the natural environmental balance.
But due to reasons like- illegal hunting, filling up of wetlands, application of insecticides etc. these migratory wild ducks are now endangered.
Many of their species are now at the brink of extinction.
If they decline, our ecosystem will also be harmed.
So governmental and non-governmental initiatives are necessary to conserve migratory wild ducks.
If we can build awareness to conserve migratory birds and can ensure their safe habitat, we’ll be able to conserve birds and maintain the equilibrium of our environment and ecosystem.
