Drug Abuse: A Frontline Nurse Urges Compassion for Users | United Nations

The Philippines is updating its former controversial policies on drugs by treating users less as criminals and more as patients who need medical help and other interventions. Thousands of people across the Southeast Asian country were reportedly killed during the so-called war on drugs which was promoted by the last administration. Michael John Maestro, a registered nurse who works on drug-abuse prevention with support from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), is advancing this more compassionate approach with meaningful results.
