How Big Will My Book Be? (Includes book size examples)

Writing a book, and wondering what size your book should be? Curious how the pages in the Microsoft Word document will translate into pages in a book? Or, possibly you just have a word count, and you're trying to figure out if it's too short or too long to be a book?

In this video, Julie Broad of Book Launchers explains how many pages of text in a Word document translates into how many pages in a typically sized non-fiction book. You'll also see some of the other book sizes that are possible, and why number of pages does matter for your publication if you want it to sit on a bookshelf.

If you're writing a book, you might be wondering, how big should my book be?
Well, size matters. Let me explain.

I'm Julie Broad with booklaunchers.com. If you're self-publishing a book, you might be wondering, how many pages is this book gonna be, how big is it gonna be and does it matter?

Well, I thought one of the best ways to explain this to you would be to show you some different books and explain how that translates into a Word document.

So these are my two books More Than Cashflow and The New Brand You. They're both actually pretty close to 70,000 words. However, in the Word document, this one was 179 whereas this one was 186. The difference was basically this one had a lot shorter paragraphs.

Now, when it translates into a printed book, they're a little different too. This one is 246 pages and this one is 268. So what's the big difference?

You have to take into account if you're going to have diagrams, pictures, illustrations, a lengthy bibliography.

All those kind of things will add pages to your book as well. If you're trying to figure out how many pages your book will end up being, a page in a six by nine book which is a pretty standard size for a nonfiction book is about 250 words equals one page. Again, illustrations, spacing, all those kind of things will play a factor.

Now, another example is this book Turning Pro by Steven Pressfield, it's printed in five by eight
so much smaller in comparison 174 pages.
The big difference is that a lot of the pages if you can look in here, they're very short.
Very short chapters with a lot of blank spaces, so it's a lot less words.
Don't know the exact word count but I'd guess it's about 30,000 words.

All that compares to The 4-Hour Chef from Tim Ferriss which comes in at about 675 pages and substantially larger.

So the answer to how big should my book be, it really depends. You have to look at your competition. You have to figure out what are your goals for your book, how are you going to print them and distribute them?

One thing to think about though if your book is too short, your spine will be too narrow
to print the title on the spine.

So you really wanna aim for at least 30,000 words if not a lot more so that you can have at least 100 pages, aiming probably more for 150, 200 pages so you've got a nice meaty spine.

Plus, if you're gonna go bookstore distribution, you gotta think about what's it gonna look like
sitting on the bookshelf because which books stand out?
The smaller the spine of your book, the harder it's going to be for people to see.

So these are all things you wanna take into consideration when you're thinking about how big should my book be?

Now, one other thing. If you print one that's this big, I hope you're strong and have money because this is gonna cost a lot of money to print and distribute as well.
