Imagine my excitement when I picked up a gorgeous 2025 Toyota GR Corolla. Things deflated quite a bit when I saw it featured two pedals instead of three, signalling that this is the new-for-2025 automatic-equipped model rather than the six-speed manual model that earned so much praise in the past.

The goal, now, is to see if an automatic hinders the feel of this rally-inspired hot-hatch.

It’s a tough sell to take a hot hatch or sport compact and rejig it to include an automatic. Hot hatches get their fun and silly appeal from being a basic car loaded with power. The more stuff you put in, including an automatic, the heavier it gets, and the less fun it can be to drive. Perhaps this is the modernization of the format. Still, the GR Corolla stands out as one of the few, basic, all-wheel-drive hot hatches on the market.
