Medieval Life Documentary: The Evolution of Architecture in the Middle Ages

Welcome to All of History!

Now that we’ve reviewed the materials, techniques, and items that medieval people used in constructing and furnishing their buildings, let’s look at the variety of structures raised during the Middle Ages. While it should be apparent that medieval European society, like any other complex civilization, had to have a large number of different types of buildings to meet its needs, it’s all too easy to focus on the castles and cathedrals that have become the most enduring symbols of that age and overlook the commercial, industrial, agricultural, and domestic buildings which were essential to medieval society. Below, we will discuss some of the principal types of buildings, some famous such as castles and others more obscure such as mills and workshops.
