Stem Cell Insights into Disease & Treatment 2019

The discovery of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells has given researchers the ability to more easily grow many human cell types in the lab. In recent years, a war chest of scientific tools has been brought to bear on cells obtained directly from patients. Outside of the body, these cells, containing the genetic and/or cellular defects underlying a given disease, can be scrutinized to understand its mechanisms and identify new gene or protein targets for drug discovery. Along with organoid technology — the capability to grow cells in 3D to model tissue and organ development— disease modeling has never been more powerful, nor its potential more within reach. What are the latest advances in modeling diseases using stem cells? What implications do they have for potential new therapies?
Moderator: James M. Wells, PhD, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, US
Speakers: Hans Clevers, MD, PhD, Hubrecht Institute, Netherlands
Sandra Engle, PhD, Biogen, USA
Kristin Baldwin, PhD, Scripps Research Institute, USA
