The 3-Second Wiper Trick #car #shorts
The design of "hidden" or "recessed" windshield wipers became a dominant trend in the automotive industry during the late 1990s and early 2000s. This shift was driven by two primary factors: aerodynamics and pedestrian safety. By positioning the wiper assembly below the rear edge of the hood, engineers significantly reduced the drag coefficient (Cd) of the vehicle, which directly improved fuel efficiency and reduced wind noise (buffeting) at high speeds. Furthermore, moving the rigid metal arms of the wipers away from the potential impact zone helped manufacturers comply with increasingly strict European pedestrian safety regulations, as the soft hood surface is less likely to cause severe head trauma during a collision.
However, this design created a practical challenge for maintenance. In their resting position, the wiper arms are physically obstructed by the hood, making it impossible to swing them away from the glass. Attempting to lift them by force can result in chipped paint on the hood's edge or damage to the wiper motor and linkage. To address this, car manufacturers (notably Volkswagen Group, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Ford) implemented a software-based "Service Mode." This feature allows the user to command the wiper motor to stop the blades at the top of their arc. While the exact trigger varies—some require a menu selection in the infotainment system, while most use a sequence of the ignition and the wiper stalk—the result is the same: the blades lock in a vertical position, providing clear access for replacement or to keep them off the glass during freezing temperatures.
