How This Aircraft Almost Disappeared Completely
Zeppelins were invented just before World War I started. They were used in the war to limited success but eventually lost their relevance in warfare because they were very easy to take down. But we found another way to use them after the war anyway. We started using zeppelins commercially as means of travel from then on. They were a leisurely way of transportation and were used prominently for a couple of decades.
But there were a couple of problems. Zeppelins and blimps are considerably slower than flying around with an airplane. This and the fact that they were not safe contributed to their eventual downfall. In the 20s and 30s, the public opinion of them was less than favorable. Airships got affected by strong winds and several disasters saw them getting destroyed completely.
The Hindenburg disaster was the straw that broke the camel's back in 1937 when the airship blew up, likely due to faulty wiring. Blimps still continued to exist in one way or another for broadcasting, advertising, and observation.
Currently, there are only 25 blimps in the world. That number is expected to rise in the future but we doubt we will see blimps being used more any time soon.
