A tour of the Taman Negara rainforest and river village in Malaysia

Taman Negara is believed to be the oldest rainforest on the planet.

In the dry season, foreigners can walk through the rainforest all day on easy paved trails.

Guides with college educations in the flora and fauna accompany foreigners through the dense forest. They point out details otherwise unnoticed by foreigners.

The forest trails lead to the stairs of the skywalk --- a network of rope walkways 30 meters above the earth. Woven of high-test ropes, absolutely safe, the walkways link platforms constructed in the treetops. Foreigners can look down on the forest floor far below. ( Don't risk the skywalk if a tropical rainstorm approaches. )

After the rainy season, the flow of the river slows. This allows guides to take foreigners upriver to the indigenous villages.

There, the villages demonstrate making fire without steel or chemicals, the technique of the blowgun, and allow the foreigners to walk the pathways through rows of thatched houses.

The poverty of the village is obvious. And I did not see the tour guides paying the villagers.

When the villagers demonstrate their traditional crafts, please pay them.
