Rashad Murphy's Lawyer Crosses Detective About Alleged Evidence Linking Him To Julio Foolios Murder

Brian E. Gonzalez is a criminal defense attorney in Tampa, Florida, who represents Rashad Murphy, one of four men on trial for the June 23, 2024, shooting death of rapper Charles "Julio Foolio" Jones Jr.

Gonzalez cross-examined Detective Juan Ramos of the Tampa Police Department today (Tuesday, April 28) into Jones' homicide and the resulting gang conspiracy charges against Murphy, Sean Gathright, Isaiah Chance and Murphy's cousin Davion Murphy.

He began by questioning Ramos about the case being his first as a lead detective, then asked about him going to the hotel parking lot where Jones was shot.

02:36 " As it relates to Armani Turner, my understanding is that she was not cooperative with you at all? Is that a fair statement?"
"To a certain extent. I mean, she provided a statement. I wouldn't say that she was completely uncooperative."
"Okay, but for the most part, she was uncooperative?"
"She was upset."

05:52 "When you spoke with Mr. Howard, as it relates to the interviews you took that morning, he, on the other hand, was kind of cool and collected, I think you termed it and unemotional. Correct?"
"He was pretty calm, yeah."

07:53 "You had the occasion to come in contact with Mr. Howard again for another interview, correct?"
"Yes."
"That would have been in August of 2025, correct?"
"And that was a result of Mr. Howard coming forward through whatever channels he did so in order to provide you additional information. Correct?"
"Correct."
"And at the time that he did so, he was now incarcerated. Correct?"
"Correct."
"He was incarcerated because almost immediately after returning to Jacksonville after the murder, he was arrested on federal offenses?"
"Correct, that's my understanding."

17:35 "when you interviewed Mr. McCray, he was not forthright with you, was he?"
"He was pretty cooperative. He concealed one bit of information."
"Well, he concealed a really important piece of information, and that was who was in the vehicle, correct?"

23:26 "Your testimony is that you believe that shooter number one is Rashad Murphy, correct?"
"Yes."
"And it's a fact, isn't it, that you cannot make a physical or facial identification of that shooter number one, by way of the Tesla hotel footage that you were able to view, correct?"
"We obviously got a great physical description facial, I would agree that you cannot see the face of the shooters on the video."

24:47 "It is it also a fact that the entirety of the physical evidence from the scene that you would relay upon to identify Rashad Murphy as shooter number one consists of what you believe are similar clothing that he was wearing at the Walmart 30 or so hours earlier, and what shooter number one is wearing at the scene?"
"That's not my belief. That's what's observable on camera."

31:28 "were you able to secure or recover a pair of black jeans that could have been owned by Mr. Murphy?"
"No."

41:49 "I can't recall the exact times between Davion Murphy's phone number and the phone number of the device that Charmaine Sager and Rashad Murphy share, does 5:03am and 5:07am sound relatively correct?"
"Again, iI would agree to that in that general vicinity

45:34 "The only video or the only evidence connecting Rashad Murphy with the Cruze would be him receiving it on the 21st correct, and then him being an occupant of it on the 26th five days later, in Gwinnett County, Georgia, correct?"
"Yes."

51:31 "if you're implying that someone else could have been using an Airbnb account utilizing his name, I would agree with that I have no way of knowing definitively who's holding the phone and who's typing in the booking details at the time, other than it was used with Rashad Murphy's name."

57:37 "And you don't have any evidence, do you, to suggest that Rashad Murphy booked that Airbnb himself, do you?"
"we have the return from from Airbnb that it was booked in his name? That would lead me to believe that he booked the Airbnb."

01:07:23 "Yes, we do know that Rashad Murphy was picked up at that Airbnb by the Uber and driven back to Jacksonville."

01:10:11 "If you come out of the back door and you're trying to get to an Uber, or you're trying to get to another car to leave that's in this parking lot, you would pass this front ring camera to get to the Uber?"
"Yeah, in theory, sure."

01:10:58 "Mr. Murphy in referring to states exhibit 30 7b he is, he is dressed pretty distinctively, right,...?"
"Yes."
"This person does not cross that parking lot from the back door of that Airbnb at any time..."
"if you're referring to just the camera, correct? But again, the Uber driver saw him get in his car at that location."

01:19:41 "So I have evidence that all of the defendants were inside of the Airbnb ... I spoke to the owner, he was very adamant that there's a thorough cleaning process that occurs..."
