What If...? – Media 8 / Escape Artists (Skip Woods' In Defense of Sleeping Beauty)

In the summer of 1998, it was announced that producers Mark Damon of MDP Worldwide and Steve Tisch had acquired a crime thriller script entitled In Defense of Sleeping Beauty, written by Skip Woods. Said to be a hard-R, darkly comic, Quentin Tarantino-esque contemporary retelling of the classic fairy tale filled with sex, drugs, and violence, the film's story centers around Kate, a woman who seems to have it all: she's young, beautiful, well-educated, and comes from a rich family, but all is not as it seems. Kate finds her life spiraling downwards hard and fast, but help comes from a less than likely source in the form of Finn, a hardened criminal, who will try to save her from herself and maybe have a chance for a happily ever after ending. Woods was also attached to direct, in what would've been his next film behind the camera after the similarly Tarantino-influenced Thursday, with producer and casting director Christine Sheaks also hopping onboard. At the time, Woods was also very busy developing Swordfish and an unproduced Logan's Run remake — the latter of which he would've also directed — for Warner Bros. Pictures and producer Joel Silver. Damon would later form Media 8 Entertainment, taking with him several projects previously set up at MDP, while Tisch would form Escape Artists with Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal. Had Woods' take on Logan's Run been produced, In Defense of Sleeping Beauty most likely would've gotten made afterwards with Media 8 and Escape Artists producing. Ultimately though, nothing ever came of the project. Follow me and ponder the question, "What if...?"
