B18 Engine Rebuild In 24 Hours (LSVTEC)

86,400 seconds!? Sounds plenty... But is it going to be enough time to get the car back on a road??

One of subscribers asked: "How did you become so knowledgeable with rebuilding engines? You learned from others? Went to school/college? Read books then applied knowledge through trial and error? I'm very curious.."

It all started in 2010. I used to deliver pizza in it. Then one day the engine lost the power and became very loud. Some guy told me I had a rod knock. Only I had no clue what that meant.

$10,000 in credit card dept I was completely broke. My co-worker, Mark Lewis, who owned a 10-second Buick Grand National offered his help. At no cost, but under three conditions. First, I would have to but the necessary parts for the rebuild. Agreed. Second, I would have to remove the engine. Wait what?! How would I do that? At the time I only knew how to change oil. This merely became the deal breaker, though I had no choice. Began removing parts as soon as I got home. Even if I fail, at least I'd give it a try. After all, the only people who don't make mistakes, are the ones that don't do anything. But then, again, that's also a mistake. So I worked on it every day. The concept was actually very simple - remove everything that I could access. In the beginning I was making multiple trips a day to a parts store since I had none. Eventually all the parts were off the car and the engine was ready to come out. I borrowed a cherry picker from a friend. Connected the chains. Thought I did everything right until the engine got completely jammed inside the engine bay. This happened after I disconnected it from the transmission. All because I didn't remove the harmonic balancer. This was preventing pressure plate from the ability to clear transmission housing. After rocking the long block back and forth for about an hour in an attempt to free it up, It became obvious that the balancer must come out. Unfortunately, at that point I was no longer able to put a socket on it. I needed to match the engine back with the tranny. However, since I failed to properly connect the chains, the engine hung sideways making it impossible. So, I placed a jack under the oil pan in order to level it. I spent another hour, but it still wouldn't line up. It actually made it more difficult since I had better control w/o the pivot point at the bottom. I then inserted a steel pipe through the upper radiator hose housing as a leverage. But as soon as I pulled on it the aluminum housing cracked. Exhausted, covered in sweat and grease, I didn't know what else to do. Plus it was getting pretty late. I felt that if I stayed on it for another 5 mins something else would break. After calling it a day, I wanted to lock the garage. To my disappointment, the hoist was getting in the way of the roll-up door. Hence I couldn't close it. All because I had it placed in front of the car. I guess I didn't know better at the time. Worried that my tools may be gone by the morning I decided to stay in the garage...

To make the story short, no - I didn’t go to school, nor did I read any books. I just desperately needed my car back. Mark kept his promise. He helped me get the engine out and rebuilt it while teaching me how to do it. In the end, I put it back. On my own. By the way, this was Mark's last condition. I can't describe how happy I was once the car started. After all, I did half of the work. From then on, I became addicted to drag racing as I was no longer afraid to break it. I basically spent next 9 years between my garage and the race track. Enjoying every moment of it. Until the winter of 2019. When i suddenly lost my mom to a cancer. That's when I realized that I can't get the time back. Mom tried to always stay positive. She'd always cheer me up. She was very proud of my accomplishments. Mom was my first priority only I never took the time to appreciate, to pay back. Please forgive me Mom. You're always in my heart. I love you. Rest in peace.

Now go ahead, get those wrenches out. If I can do it, so can you. Just remember not to repeat my mistakes.
