Australia Proposes Major NDIS Overhaul

The federal government has introduced major proposed changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme aimed at slowing the scheme’s rapid growth and saving $36.2 billion over four years.

The reforms could tighten eligibility requirements, reduce funding for some support categories, and give Health Minister Mark Butler expanded powers to change NDIS rules, pricing and funding arrangements.

Under the proposal, participants may need to prove they have exhausted all appropriate treatment options before qualifying for support.

The legislation also raises concerns about possible funding gaps for some participants if support costs exceed approved funding levels.

Other changes include stricter plan reassessments, tighter provider regulations, faster claim deadlines and expanded NDIA compliance powers.

The bill will now be reviewed through a parliamentary inquiry before any final reforms are confirmed.
