At the conclusion of the G7 summit in Évian, the leaders of the world’s largest economies signed a joint declaration supporting Ukraine. Among the signatories was U.S. President Donald Trump, whose previous actions had suggested he was more supportive of Russia than Ukraine in the conflict. Is this a pivot on Trump’s part?

Poland’s former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paweł Wojciechowski, says he would not go that far.

“The president of the United States always said, ‘We want to make a deal.’ He blamed Ukraine for not being willing to come to the table after so many months of trying,” Wojciechowski told TVP World, adding that the situation on the front lines and Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia have changed in Kyiv’s favor in recent months.

""The Russians are under pressure. Some people say they know they’re losing the war, and they will lose,” said the former official. ""So I think the pivot (…) is something like Trump saying, 'Yes, I am willing to acknowledge that Russia is not willing to come to the table at this moment.'""
