830 years ago two brothers – Asen and Theodore, famous boyars, took the lead of the discontent of their countrymen against Byzantine Empire.
In 1185 Byzantium was going through difficult times and its glory was weakened.
That was the perfect moment for the Bulgars to throw off the dominion of the Empire and become independent again.
A miraculous icon of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki landed in the hands of the two brothers. It happened after the looting of Thessaloniki by the Normans.
Asen and Theodore announced that the it was time for fight – fight for freedom and independency. They assured Bulgarians that this time the outcome will be successful for them, because they have a patron saint – St. Demetrius. He will protect and help them.
The two brothers built a church in honor of St Demetrius.
During the sanctification of the church on 26th of October 1185, three important things happened:
1 the restoration of the Bulgarian church and Archbishopric.
2 Theodore was named Peter and proclaimed emperor of Bulgaria
3 the official announcement of the uprising against Byzantium
As to St Demetrius – he was one of the most honored saints in The Second Bulgarian Kingdome. He was considered as a protector of Asen dynasty.
After repeated military clashes, Asen and Peter succeeded in restoration of the Bulgarian freedom from Byzantium. Bulgarian Kingdome appeared again on the map.

On 26th of October 2015 we note 830 year since the uprising of Asen and Peter, who succeeded in the liberation of Bulgaria from the Byzantine Empire.
