Top 5 signs you’re pregnant with twins

Am I pregnant with twins?
The thought crosses the mind of almost every mum-to-be “is it twins?!” 1 out of every 65 pregnancies in the UK are twin (or more) births, so it’s definitely a fitting question to ask!

There are a number of factors which can influence your chances of having twins, and you will find out for sure whether twins are on their way at your 12 week dating ultrasound scan.
Before then, here are the top 5 signs you should look out for which could signal that twins are on their way. Signs can often be detected more easily by mums who have had a single pregnancy before as they are able to tell the difference between their previous pregnancies and their current one!

1. Weight gain
Rapid weight gain is a common sign of a twin pregnancy and it’s completely normal for a mum-to-be pregnant with twins to put on more weight than a woman carrying a single baby; you’re creating twice the amount of babies after all!

2. Extreme tiredness
While it’s normal to feel tired when you’re pregnant, women carrying twins are more likely to experience extreme tiredness or exhaustion as they adapt to being pregnant with two growing babies, and your has to body adjust to increased energy requirements.

3. Increased nausea
Although not all twin pregnancies result in increased nausea and morning sickness, many mums-to-be who are expecting twins report increased and more severe nausea than they experienced during their singleton pregnancies.
4. Prominent varicose veins
Carrying twins requires more blood than just a singleton, as two babies require more help and support to grow and develop healthily. As a result, more blood flows through the veins in your circulatory system, leading to increased pressure which can develop varicose veins.

5. Iron deficiency anaemia symptoms
Iron deficiency anaemia, where you have fewer red blood cells than necessary, is more common during multiple pregnancies than in single pregnancies. This is because of the extra pressure put on blood supply during a twin pregnancy. Symptoms can include fatigue, shortness of breath, noticeable heartbeats, dizziness, headaches and a pale complexion, so it's important to make sure you’re including enough iron in your diet! It’s easily treated so speak to your midwife if you experience any of these symptoms.
