The Best $60 Mod For 2022 Honda Grom More Speed AND Acceleration! No 17t Sprocket Go with 14t & 31t

Do This $60 Mod To Your 2022 Honda Grom Before You Do Any Other! Higher Speed w/ Minimal Accel Loss! Forget the 17 tooth sprocket.

Rear and front sprocket reduction for higher speed without having to give up acceleration!
Changing the stock rear 38 tooth sprocket to a 31 tooth sprocket will drastically reduce the rotational mass in the drivetrain. Along with the rear sprocket reduction going to a 14 tooth front sprocket will bring the overall gear reduction from 2.5333 @ 15t/38t down to 2.2142 @ 14t/31t. Furthermore, the 14t/31t @2.2142 ratio will actually give higher top speeds than the 17t/38t @2.2352. It’s a very minor difference but nevertheless this new arrangement is better in this regard as well. On top of these already appreciable rotational mass and moment of inertia sprocket reductions, the chain is reduced by 4 links, further reducing the rotational mass of the drivetrain. All these changes together result in much less energy losses to spinning up and down the sprocket/chain drivetrain to maintain/increase acceleration WHILE also increasing the top speed and/or decreasing engine cruising RPMs

25-30mph = 4000-5000rpm 3rd gear
45-50mph = 4500-5000rpm 5th gear

I weigh 210lbs and was well under half throttle cruising around at 50mph in 5th gear.
This is a whole new bike!!!

So just as a starting comment.
I. ABSOLUTELY. LOVE IT!! I need to give it just a little bit more throttle on immediate take off to start it moving but once it’s locked in with the engine in first gear it pulls and I do not feel like I’ve lost any take off. And just for the record so no one scorns me, technically it’s not “making more power” it’s “making power available that was previously being lost”. So either way, if you do this and don’t plan to drive it “faster/harder” ie doing all the same accelerations as before, you’ll save on gas 🤷‍♂️ so it’s a win win regardless.

For me getting a little bit more time before having to shift to second also was a very nice change. First gear before just felt so short.

Lastly i really REALLY like using this new setup because it seems to put my cruising speeds in a better torque/power band of the engine. Like downshifting to pass someone just puts it right where I want the engine to be for most torque/power to take off at speed. again I’m not talking like HUGE changes or anything. The bike just seems to like these ranges a little bit better for the speeds and roads that I’ve been driving around on, which is all 25, 30-35, 45 and 55 mph roads Being in third gear cruising downtown at 25mph puts me right at 4500-5000rpm and then if I need to accelerate it’s just throttle because I still have all the top end of 3rd to go and I believe the power/torque band of the new grom really peaks between 5000 and 8000. I think I mentioned this in the video but it also puts the engine in a nicer rpm that gives a little bit deeper of a hum to it being in lower RPMs but that’s really just personal preference.

I will say the only issue is I don’t have a Speedo healer so my dash reads me going slower than I actually am. I used a gps speedometer and at 35mph on the dash the gps says I’m actually going 40.
I took it on a quick strip of highway yesterday and in full tuck flat ground pinned I got it up to 70mph on my gps. And before my max speed pinned was like 60-62 going slightly downhill (I weigh 210lbs as well just for the record)

You can still get the higher than stock gear ratio while still using this principle of reducing the rear sprocket. I think most drop to a 14 in the front for wheelies and stunting so that would be 14t/38t @2.7142 to just change the front on stock. So to achieve that a 13t/35t @2.6923 or (if they make a 12t front for the grom 🤷‍♂️ idk if they do) 12t/32t @2.6666 or 12t/33t @2.7500 ratios.

As well I finally got to go out riding with a buddy who also has the new 2022 grom. He has a yoshi pipe on his though with stock gearing and he’s about 30lbs lighter than me and he definitely gets the pull on me off the line, which is to be expected changing the gearing like this but honestly not by much. like it’s close enough that I’m wondering what it would be like if we were the same weight because 30lbs is a big weight difference.

I went with the PBI sprockets on Amazon. But the holes in the sprocket were smaller than the bolts on the sprocket hub. So I had to drill out the holes to be larger to fit. I explain more in the video. Hope this helps!
