Pac-Facts: ⚪️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️🥠
—Pac-Man was created to appeal to female audiences since arcades were popular with boys at the time. Toru Iwatani decided to make the game about eating since it’s something universal and helps gamers relate to the character.
—“Paku-Paku” is the Japanese onomatopoeic word for munching, so Namco decided to call the game Puck-Man. However, since they thought American audiences would vandalize the arcade machines to change the P to an F, Namco rightfully changed the name to Pac-Man.
—Toru Iwatani wanted the game to be bright and colorful, so he made Pac-Man yellow, which is thought to be a happy and joyful color. He also didn’t want violence in his game, so he made ghosts as enemies, which couldn’t be killed the traditional way.
—Fruits were added as bonuses to give players more to do as well as add more color. Eventually, Toru Iwatani ran out of ideas for what fruit to add, so he added a galaxian from the game “Galaxian”, a bell that would later be seen in the game “Mappy”, and a key that would be seen in the game “Super Pac-Man” 2 years later.
—Midway was Namco’s distributor of Pac-Man arcade cabinets in America. Arcade cabinets were modded quite often to spice up a pre-existing game, like modding Galaxian to make Galaga. These mods were allowed as long as the creator of the games gave permission. General Computer Corporation wanted to mod Pac-Man and Midway gave permission, even though Midway had no say in the matter since they didn’t create the game. Regardless, Pac-Man was modded to Ms. Pac-Man (or Pac-Woman). It had multiple mazes, new cutscenes, new sound effects, and new fruit that moved around the screen. Namco found out about this mod and weren’t too pleased. They sued Midway for infringement, but Midway didn’t mean any harm and gave the rights to Ms. Pac-Man and all the money the game had earned to Namco. Namco appreciated Midway’s compliance and accepted. They didn’t fire Midway, but are now keeping a closer eye on their distributors.
—The song “Pac-Man Fever” released in 1982 and got No. 9 on the billboard records.
