Fort Mountain Hohokam Site: The Lost Observatory Near Phoenix

The Fort Mountain Hohokam observatory may have been one of ancient Arizona’s most fascinating hilltop sites. Archaeologists found evidence that the Fort Mountain Hohokam observatory may have marked the winter solstice, with the sunrise appearing in a natural notch between the Superstition Mountains and Usery Mountains. The Fort Mountain Hohokam observatory was later lost to mining, but its story still reveals how the Hohokam watched the sky, marked time, and built meaning into the desert landscape.

This Short is part of my Secrets of the Hohokam series on ancient Arizona, Hohokam history, archaeology, and lost places near Phoenix. The article describes Fort Mountain as an early Classic period Hohokam hilltop retreat with evidence pointing toward astronomical and ceremonial use.
