Are Americans Facing an Undemocratic Future?

U.S. democracy is at a dangerous inflection point. As America emerges from the January 6th assault on the Capitol, society faces a critical question: Can democracy bounce back or are Americans facing an un-democratic future?

It will be no easy task to undo the damage to U.S. institutions. However, this work is essential to ensure that democracy remains at the core of the American system—both today and for generations to come. To secure such a future will require a recommitment to ethical action by leaders and citizens alike.

Carnegie Council President Joel Rosenthal hosts a virtual conversation with Jason Stanley, professor of philosophy at Yale University and author of "How Fascism Works," to discuss current threats to U.S. democracy, whether America faces an illiberal future, and how a commitment to ethical action might provide a path forward.

Jason Stanley is Jacob Urowsky Professor of Philosophy at Yale University and author of "How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them."

Joel Rosenthal is the president of Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs.
