I'm Fine - Short Film
"With unruly words echoing in her head, a stressed high school student must cope with depression and anxiety while struggling to survive. Will she ever be more than just fine?"
A Note From the Director:
"People fear what they don't understand, and hate what they can't conquer," writes author Andrew Smith. I believe this connects perfectly with Mental Illness. We believe that by exploring this theme through film, we can help spark a conversation about honesty and positive education. Mental illness is a constant battle that never has clear victories. Battles are rarely won by a single individual: it takes an army that is properly equipped to bring about change. Problems can't be fixed unless we admit there is one, and once we admit to a problem, we need to educate ourselves to find the best resolution.
The phrase "I'm Fine" is often a default response used by those who live with depression or anxiety: a mask used to cover up the everyday struggles these individuals face. Due to the pervasiveness of this phrase in the vocabulary of mental illness, it immediately defined our theme and became the title for this film. The story took shape soon after: a teenage girl who suffers from depression and anxiety. To the world, she is perfectly "normal" and "fine." The main character is able to hide her suffering very well, keeping her condition invisible to nearly everyone else. She suffers in silence. Many members of the production team deal with mental illness in one way or another, and they wanted to show that those living with mental illness don't always live in constant misery. Depression and anxiety are not defined by a never ending metaphorical raincloud.
