The Lost Prince | Part 1 - BBC Movie

King George V and his wife Queen Mary decide to hide their last-born son, Johnnie, from the public, being embarrassingly affected by epilepsy. While his protective elder brother is ruthlessly groomed for court life, Johnnie gets packed off to a country cottage on the royal estate Sandringham. With his full-time governess Lalla, a substitute-mother, he's abandoned to playfulness and virtual social neglect. The Great War and the Russian Revolution change life in Britain, also at court, even at Sandringham, where royal refugees are expected.

Young Prince John is loved for his frankness by his grandfather, the ailing King Edward VII. But this strange and opinionated little boy suffers from epilepsy, and mysterious learning disabilities prevent him from participating in public life. As the world edges towards World War I, his mother and his newly crowned father are increasingly distant, embroiled in world affairs, while the medical profession declares Johnnie an imbecile and an embarrassment to the family. Only his devoted nurse, Lalla, sees the loving, funny, insightful child - the true prince - locked inside the stubborn shell.
