On the first Sunday of Advent, churches around the world celebrate the beginning of a new liturgical year. On the first of the four Advent Sundays leading up to Christmas in 1724, Bach composed the famous cantata no. 62 “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland” (Come now, Saviour of the Gentiles), based on the famous chorale by Martin Luther, which is a paraphrase of the Latin Chant “Veni redemptor gentium” (Come, Redeemer of the Nations), a hymn assigned for the Advent season.

Therefore this cantata, along with other chorale cantatas from the same cycle written during Bach’s second year in Leipzig, is considered as a cross-generational expression of worship which is beyond time and space —a Medieval chant from the first centuries turned into a reformation chorale in the 16th century, later became the foundation of Bach’s famous cantata in the 18th century, which has been performed widely around the world ever since. The tune has also been adapted in many church organ works, particularly the chorale preludes.

The Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra will perform this chorale cantata at the St. Thomas Church during Bachfest Leipzig 2022, the place where Bach worked during the last 27 years of his life, written and premiered many cantatas like this one, and also where his body is resting now. We have created a very special virtual performance of this entire cantata in June as part of our virtual concert, and we would like to share it with you again during this season of hope and anticipation.
