Removeing Motorcycle tank dents using basic tools before stripping for paint

Removing dents in motorcycle tank, tank needs a repaint as the dents had cracked the paint causing some rust, tank had the normal surface rust underneath, it's was a toss up between removing dents before or after stripping the paint, i choose to leave paint on to help with the sighting of the dents when pushed out.
