Humpback Whale Giving Birth on Maui -- First Time Recorded

Arguably the best day of our 2019-2020 whale watching season. A female humpback and male escort circled the boat. When we put our cameras in the water we noticed something really special --- a small whale tail starting to come of the female! (Check around 51 seconds in the video). She was giving birth! A humpback birth had never been recorded so we called NOAA. NOAA observed the female as long as they could, but never witnessed the full birth. For months we were unsure if it had been a successful birth but the female whale was spotted with a healthy calf a few months later on Maui. What a beautiful and exciting day on the water.
