Why People Used to Read Out Loud for 1,000+ Years #didyouknow #history #science #viral #etymology

For most of human history, people didn’t read silently. They read out loud even when alone.

Ancient texts had no spaces between words, so sounding them out was necessary to understand meaning. Silent reading only became possible much later, once spacing and writing systems evolved.

One of the earliest recorded mentions of silent reading comes from Saint Augustine, who found it unusual that someone could read without moving their lips.

This shift didn’t just change reading it changed how humans think, creating the internal voice we use today.
