The 16th Century was an unprecendented time in history. The century before plagued England with civil war and by the time Henry VII defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 very few male heirs were left.

Despite Henry VII successfully producing two sons with his wife, Elizabeth of York, the eldest son, Arthur, died before he could ascend the throne and the youngest, Henry VIII failed to produce a healthy son. The legitimate son he did produce, Edward VI, died at the age of 16, 6 years into his reign.

After his death only female heirs were left, something of a rarity. Despite the Catholic Mary, Edward's sister being next in line to the throne, he nominated his Protestant cousin Jane to be his successor instead due to the religious tensions at the time. On the 19th July 1553 however, Jane Grey was defeated by Mary Tudor who was determined to claim her birth right. She was crowned as the first Queen Regnant of England. Mary intended to spare her cousins life but with fresh rebellions continuing to call for Jane to become Queen, Mary was forced to execute the 16 year old girl on the 12th February 1554.

Only a month later, Mary imprisoned her half-sister Elizabeth, suspecting her of being part of the Wyatt Rebellion with which she fervently protested her innocence. Unlike the tragic outcome of Jane Grey however, Mary decided to spare her sister due to lack of evidence, the want to uphold the divine right of kings and morality. Her mercy ulitmately led to Elizabeth ascending the throne in 1558 after Mary's death in November.

Despite Elizabeth's long reign, she was constantly threatened by her Catholic cousin Mary, Queen of Scots who was seen by many English Catholics as the legitimate ruler. After conflict in Scotland, Mary fled to England in hopes of Elizabeth's protection and support. This decision would cost her 19 years imprisonment and ultimately her life in 1587, being found guilty of plotting to assasinate Elizabeth. Her involvement is still disputed up to this day. In her final days it was observed that Elizabeth displayed extreme guilt for executing her cousin.
