Loss to Legacy Through Research: A Mother’s Story | Lisa Connor | TEDxSHSU

The grief that comes with the loss of a child is a journey with no end, but sometimes loss sparks hope. In this talk, Lisa Connor describes how the loss of her child led to a legacy of research and discovery of a gene with important medical implications. Foundational knowledge from the cells of her child has supported discovery of potential therapy for many diseases, including cancer. In this talk, she hopes to support those who have suffered fetal loss and miscarriage in coming to understand that, while genetics may be the reason for their loss, research leads to amazing new discoveries and understanding about the human body. Lisa Connor is a Research & Instruction Librarian supporting the College of Health Sciences at Sam Houston State University. She earned a BS in Nutrition from Pennsylvania State University and MS in Library & Information Science from Drexel University. She also completed a grant-funded course of study from Simmons University to earn an Advanced Inter-professional Informationist Certificate. In her role, she supports faculty and students through education and consultation of evidence-based information resources. She is an Assistant Professor with research interests supported by National Institutes of Health funding for engagement with the “All of Us” Research Program, which motivates her passion for the promise of data to advance and accelerate personalized medicine and rare disease treatments.
