The Ballad of L.H. Musgrove Gang – Outlaw of the Larimer Bridge!
LYRICS:
(Verse 1)
Out where the west winds wail and moan,
L.H. Musgrove rode, a man alone.
Born in Illinois, ‘neath a restless sky,
A fire in his heart and a spark in his eye.
From Tennessee’s fields to Mississippi clay,
He lost his love, and his soul slipped away.
Catherine Fowler, his heart’s sweet flame,
But grief turned to sin, and he earned his blame.

(Chorus)
Oh, Lewis Musgrove, what did you do?
Stole from the land, and the law caught you.
With a pen in your hand, ‘neath the hangman’s tree,
You wrote to your brother, your wife, and your plea.
The Musgrove Gang rode, wild and free,
But the Larimer Bridge was your destiny.

(Verse 2)
When Catherine died, his heart grew cold,
The outlaw’s life, it took its hold.
A war-time feud sparked a deadly flame,
A shot in the dark, and he bore the blame.
Run out of Napa to Nevada’s dust,
Two men fell dead, their blood in the rust.
At Fort Halleck’s gates, he killed once more,
His crimes piled high on a lawless shore.

(Verse 3)
The Musgrove Gang, a desperate band,
Stole herds of cattle across the land.
From Fort Steele’s plains to Poudre’s stream,
They chased their fortune in outlaw dreams.
Disguised as shadows, they struck by night,
Blamed native tribes for their thievin’ blight.
Four men lay dead, by their wicked hand,
The law closed in on that cursed band.

(Bridge)
Caught by Cronin, bound hand and foot,
He jumped from the train, but his freedom was cut.
To Denver they hauled him, shackled and worn,
The crowd’s angry roar like a gathering storm.
He begged for his children, a father’s last cry,
For Napa’s young hearts, ‘neath a darkening sky.
To Mary he swore, “I’m innocent, my love,”
One last farewell ‘fore the heavens above.

(Verse 4)
The crowd at the bridge, they called for his soul,
No trial would wait, no bell would toll.
He stood on the wagon, his fate in view,
Rolled one last smoke as the cold wind blew.
A leap to the sky, to break his fall,
L.H. Musgrove answered death’s call.
His name lives on, though his sins were wrong,
A shadow cast in this lonesome song.

(Outro)
So sing of the outlaw, his tale of woe,
From Wyoming’s plains to the bridge’s shadow.
L.H. Musgrove, his story’s done,
A restless soul ‘neath the settin’ sun.
The Musgrove Gang, now silent and still,
Their echo haunts the lonesome hill.
