Mabuhay!

The two things I love about Philippine Airlines is their warm Filipino service and very good Philippine-inspired catering. Come fly with me on PAL's long haul Boeing 777-300ER from San Francisco to Manila.
What I liked:

The Warm Service - The in-flight service from the crew was impeccable and we were addressed by name throughout the flight. The crew were very warm, proactive, and eager to please the passengers. The meal service was also perfectly paced.
The Catering - The catering on this flight was outstanding. The crew did a good job on the presentation, but most importantly the in-flight meals were tasty and there were plenty of options to choose from.

What I didn’t like:
The Mabuhay Lounge at SFO - It’s dated, small, and when it gets crowded, the lounge is literally standing room only as there are only a handful of seats available for guests. The food options were OK with cold sandwiches, clam chowder, instant noodles, and other snacks. There’s a small self-serve bar and a decent amount of beverage offerings. PAL seriously needs to renovate this lounge soon if they want to compete with other Asian carriers.
Long Lines at Passport Control in Manila - This flight arrived at about 4:00AM in Manila, so I was very surprised to see such a long line at passport control. Apparently a few flights all arrived around the same time, hence the backup. I wish PAL would provide their premium passengers a fast track lane to bypass the long lines.

It’s fine...
The seats - The seats on this plane were the newer refreshed version of PAL’s old Recaro angled flat business class seats in a 2-3-2 configuration. Though the configuration is still 2-3-2 and does not give direct aisle access for all seats. The difference is that these seats recline to a full flat bed and it was very comfortable for the 14-hour flight to Manila.

The Amenities – PAL’s business class amenities are decent, though they don’t provide pajamas. A full size pillow and good quality duvet were waiting at our seats. A Furla amenity kit, slippers, and WIFI card were also provided to business class passengers. The lavatories were on the small side, but they were very clean and stocked with L’Occitane toiletries.
Overall impression:

Overall I’ve been very impressed by PAL’s onboard service and catering in the sky, but just like my past reviews the ground experience leaves a lot to be desired eg. The Mabuhay Lounge at SFO and the long queues in Manila upon arrival. Let’s hope PAL fixes these issues soon, so they can truly be a world class airline.
