Dr Stella Ameyo Adadevoh was a Nigerian physician who was credited with having curbed a wider spread of the Ebola virus in Nigeria by placing the patient zero, Patrick Sawyer, in quarantine despite pressure from the Liberian government.
Dr Adadevoh was a great-granddaughter to Nigerian nationalist, Herbert Macaulay, and grand-niece to Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria’s first president.
She was born in Lagos on 27 October 1956. By 1981, she had earned a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Lagos.
In July 2014, Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian-American, flew from Liberia, a hotspot during the Ebola virus epidemic, to Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. However, he fell ill and was admitted to a private hospital.
Despite the lack of adequate protective gear, it was Dr Adadevoh who diagnosed Sawyer with EVD and took responsibility for both his health and the containment of the Ebola virus.
At a time when government doctors were on strike, Dr Adadevoh held Sawyer in the hospital despite pressure from the Liberian government to release him to travel to Calabar, 750km from Lagos, where he was supposed to attend a conference.
Dr Adadevoh’s handling of Sawyer who was Nigeria’s index EVD case effectively limited the prevalence of the disease in the country.
Dr Adadevoh died less than a month after her patient. She was one of 19 confirmed EVD cases and eight deaths recorded in Nigeria.
Ameyo Adadevoh married Afolabi Emmanuel Cardoso on April 26, 1986. The couple had one son, Bankole Cardoso.
On 19 August 2014, Nigerian doctor, Dr Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, died in Lagos, in quarantine because she had been infected with the Ebola virus disease (EVD) while selflessly discharging her duties as a physician.
